Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of West Bend 76026 High Speed Baking QuikServe Oven, Black/SilverCustomer Review: "I yam what I yam!" Summary: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
What I'm not is a toaster or a toaster/oven. What I am is a "quikserve" oven.
A what? Well, in this reviewer's opinion, a West Bend Quikserve Oven is better than any toaster or toaster/oven I've ever owned. What toaster or toaster/oven, for instnce, can toast bread (in this case, my own homemade loaf that I don't trust to just anything) that has been -- are you ready for this -- pre-slathered with Irish butter, then toasted, and ready to eat in just three to four minutes? If the butter runs off, it doesn't matter since the heating element is protected and a brief wipe of the non-stick baking tray with a paper towel completes the cleaning process. Try that -- no, don't -- in a toaster or toaster/oven.
And on those days when I can't face another page of Keller, or Robuchon, or Boulud and I hear the frozen pizza or some fish sticks calling my name, this little jewel is standing by to help. It did a much better job on the same brand and type of frozen pizza than my big oven -- I swear. As for the fish sticks (which were banned from my kitchen thirty years ago until I recently tasted a sampe of Trident's Wild Alaskan Pollock Fish Sticks) they were crispy and hot in six minutes -- with no preheating! At the same time, I dipped into my stash of refrigerated pre-boiled potatoes, chopped them up, mixed in some salt and pepper, a dash of e.v.o.o. and a little grated pecorino asiago, and added them to the baking tray along with the fish sticks. They also emerged hot and perfectly browned.
And, yes, I made the chocolate chip cookies. The key words in that recipe are "rounded teaspoons." In other words, they need to be on the small side. Now, why the idiots who wrote the recipe book decided to make enough batter to feed a small army, I'll never know. I ended up finishing the rest in my oven. There was nothing wrong with the ones I baked in the quikserve, but I didn't have all day to bake what would have amounted to dozens of batches. Recommendation: cut the ingredients in half.
A large slice of frozen leftover quiche was still cold in the middle when I had to remove it before the crust browned too much, but I believe about a minute first in the microwave will solve that problem.
In my opinion it is a handsome design -- snazzy, in fact. The width is three inches narrower than my Black & Decker toaster/oven, four inches deeper and three inches less in height. And -- really important to me -- it is completely silent (except for the timer signals, of course.) Have you heard some of those toaster/convection oven combos?
I agree with several of the reviews that anything that is several inches thick or something that is undoubtedly going to splutter and spatter is probably not advisable for this machine. But since I never used my Black & Decker for roasting or baking, that is not a major deficit for me.
A little advice: Until you have experimented with the mode selections and times, DO NOT WALK AWAY FROM IT. Otherwise, be prepared to hear your smoke signal shrieking away.
Okay, yes, it is a little pricey, and the recipe section in the manual is minimal, at best. Still, it is what it claims to be, and I, for one, am absolutely delighted with it. Can't wait for breakfast and some more butter-soaked toast.
